I got my husband tickets to Sun WhiskeyFest for his birthday, so we spent Friday night at Mohegan eating, drinking, and being merry with a group of our close friends. I had heard rumors about WineFest and BrewFest being sh*t shows, so I was slightly apprehensive at first, but it was a fun night and I mercifully did not witness anyone getting sick into innocent planters or nearby trash cans. Here is a breakdown of how we organized the night for maximum fun and limited pressure.
I reserved my husband and I a room at the Courtyard Marriott in Norwich because the price was decent, it was only about 15 minutes from the casino, and they had a free shuttle to and from Mohegan. Bonus! Our room was big, had a little balcony, and definitely provided us with enough comfort and amenities for a one night stay.
A friend called ahead and reserved us a table at Michael Jordan’s 23.Sportcafe, which was pretty clutch because there was also a Tony Bennett concert Friday night and the place was packed! We got to the casino early, made it in time for a happy hour house margarita at Sol T0ro and then headed to Michael Jordan’s for dinner. I had the French dip which was just the right amount of carbs to set myself up for a night of sipping whiskey.
Doors to WhiskeyFest opened at 7pm. We entered, got our wristbands, a coupon for a free cigar, and made our way into the ballroom empty glass in hand. There were over 60 tables sampling whiskey/rye/scotch and several tables reserved by local restaurants providing samples of everything from pulled pork to grilled cheese. After I went around and tried all of the cinnamon whiskey I stumbled upon a back bar area serving actual cocktails (no additional charge) which was a life saver because sipping straight whiskey for 4 hours is just not something that can happen in real life.
It was busy, but it didn’t feel so packed that you couldn’t get where you needed to go or taste what you had your eye on. I used my coupon for a free cigar and gave it to my husband because I don’t smoke. It was nice that they didn’t allow anyone to smoke the cigars in the ballroom because that would have turned into a hot mess. Overall, we had a great night and would definitely recommend the event to other whiskey lovers out there!
