My husband and I took the most amazing honeymoon to Italy and France after we got married in 2015. We had been out of the country once before on a cruise to the Bahamas in 2013, but neither of us had ever taken a big overseas trip. At times I was more excited to plan our honeymoon than I was the wedding! However, it wasn’t easy because I was a complete novice when it came to European travel and found it challenging to find a one stop shop that would tell me where we should go and how long we should stay there. I spent hours on travel forums and blogs and eventually pieced it together, but it took a few months. To spare others the same struggle, I’m outlining our European Honeymoon Itinerary here for you!
Where We Went
We chose to go Rome, Florence, Venice, and Paris, in that order. Geographically it made sense to work our way North in Italy and then head to Paris from there. I was also able to research so many amazing things to do in each city that we had a clear idea before we left of specific things we wanted to do and see. Based on my research we could plan to spend several days in Rome, Florence, and Paris, but could get away with a slightly shorter amount of time in Venice.
How we got around
We traveled between each city via train, including an overnight train from Venice to Paris. I booked and printed all of our train tickets before we left because I didn’t want have to worry about any kind of potential language barrier buying tickets overseas. We took cabs to and from the train stations in Rome and Florence. While in each city we walked everywhere. When we got to Venice there was a water festival going on, so we couldn’t take a water shuttle to our bed and breakfast as planned. We ended up walking up and over all of the little bridges with all of our luggage until we found our B&B. Fortunately, we were able to take a water shuttle back to the train station when we left for Paris. In Paris we traveled via subway. Paris is much like NYC, which I didn’t realize until we were there. I’m comfortable on subways and metros and after a little work we were able to figure out the system and travel around the city that way. We walked around Paris a lot also and logged our highest walking mileage for the whole honeymoon our first full day Paris…13 miles!
