I love reading on other blogs what the blogger is in to that month. I find it interesting and usually get some good ideas from their posts. I’m starting a monthly Friday Favorites series on the last Friday of each month where I talk about what I’m currently reading, watching, eating, wearing, and loving. This is the first edition!
I’m currently reading Wally Lamb’s, We Are Water. I have read most of Wally Lamb’s books and have loved them all. They are not an easy read! They’re long, deep, and can be emotionally draining. He does not portray the picture perfect life. Most of his characters have very pronounced flaws, some of which are taboo, but his novels tell the story of what the world is really like. I also enjoy his books because they take place in Connecticut, so I often recognize the areas of the state, landmarks, highways, etc. that he mentions. It makes me feel connected to the text and characters in a different way.
I’m only about a third of the way done with We Are Water, but it tells the story of a middle-aged couple who has recently divorced with flashes to previous times in their lives together and before they met. There are various sub plots, as with all of his books, and the character development is excellent.
I am a huge tv person and always have been. My DVR is always stocked and I think I may be one of the few people who is still watching Grey’s Anatomy every week and has been since the very beginning. I recently binge-watched the first two seasons of The Magicians on Netflix. I’m not usually a big science fiction person, but I love anything to do with magic. The main characters are all early to mid-twenties and there are dragons and fairies and spells and everything that I love. The third season started at the beginning of this month on SYFY and I look forward to watching it every week.
I also flew through The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime tv. I love everything Amy Sherman-Palladino does, I am one of the top 5 biggest Gilmore Girls fan on the planet, and her new show really is marvelous. It’s set in the 1950’s so the clothes are to die for and the dialogue is so witty I end up laughing the entire episode. It won two well-deserved Golden Globes and if you haven’t seen it yet you need to put everything else aside and get on it.
Okay, let’s talk Whole30. I did a Whole27 last February and was very strict. I had never gone more than 3 days in a row without eating cheese or bread prior to that diet and it was a struggle. Mike and I decided to Whole30 in January, ya know along with everyone else in America, but I had a harder time being as strict as I was the last time. Mike has been sticking to the Whole30 guidelines with the exception of one meal off per week because sanity is important too. I’ve been doing more low dairy, low gluten, low sugar, but not being as restrictive. I just needed a cleanse after the holidays and my snacking had gotten out of control, so it’s been nice to meal plan healthy meals for the week and stay focused on healthy options on the weekend too.
I’m a jeans and t-shirt girl, but it can be really difficult for me to find jeans that fit me well. I’m a pear shape and my waist is almost a full size smaller than my hips. I have to do some heavy duty searching to find jeans that will fit my bottom half, but have a tighter waist to avoid the dreaded above the butt waistband gap that usually plagues me. I try jeans on all over the place, but recently found a pair at Old Navy that fit like a glove. They are the Rockstar Mid-Rise Destructed Skinny Jean and they are my new best friend. They have a little stretch to them and have a tapered waist so no waistband gap for this girl! I feel like I’ve literally found the unicorn pair of jeans I’ve been searching for since I was 15.
The other thing I’m wearing this month is crew neck sweatshirts. I bought a couple from Old Navy and have been wearing them non-stop. They’re super comfy and great to pair with my favorite jeans (as shown and described above).
I am not a coffee drinker. When I reference “drinking coffee” I’m drinking Caramel Cafe Escapes which is a coffee like substitute that tastes nothing like actual coffee. I still love going to Starbucks though and always gets the Very Berry Hibiscus Refresher. Imagine my surprise and delight when I found that they sell Very Berry Hibiscus powder mixers at Target! It’s become my Friday treat to take one to work in my favorite Kate Spade tumbler. I shake the powder with 2 cups of cold water and some ice cubes so the powder mixes in well and it tastes almost exactly the same as when I order it at Starbucks. Sometimes I even throw in some fresh or frozen berries to make it extra special.
